About Nicholas Schmitt, MD
Dr. Schmitt is an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon who specializes in the management of deformities and abnormalities of the eyelids, lacrimal (tear) system, the orbit (the bony cavity surrounding the eye), and the adjacent face.
An ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon is an ophthalmologist (medical doctor and eye surgeon) who has completed additional training in plastic surgery as it relates to the eyes and their surrounding structures, as well as training in injectables such as BOTOX®, Restylane® and JUVÉDERM™.
The word plastic is derived from a Greek word that means to mold or to give form. Plastic surgery is surgery that molds or reconstructs parts of the human body. Ophthalmic plastic surgery is plastic surgery that is limited to the structures surrounding the eye. Since such surgery can affects one's ability to see, ophthalmic plastic surgeons are best qualified to perform this delicate surgery and also provide any care that the eye itself may need.
Nicholas J. Schmitt, M.D. received his first undergraduate degree in music at the University of Miami. He then went on to pursue a second undergraduate degree in electrical engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. After an internship in internal medicine, he completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Following his residency, Dr. Schmitt completed a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive, and Orbital Surgery and Neuro-Ophthalmology under Randall L. Beatty, MD and John S. Kennerdell, MD at Drexel University College of Medicine - Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA .
Dr. Schmitt joined Northwest Eye in 2005. Dr. Schmitt specializes in Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive, and Orbital Surgery and Neuro-Ophthalmology. His interests include cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, lacrimal surgery, medical and surgical management of orbital disease (including thyroid eye disease and trauma), and neuro-ophthalmology. Dr. Schmitt is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Schmitt is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.
